NSR Modeling Course: Classroom and computer access policies

Classroom access

The NSR August 2011 course will be held in the Advanced Computing Lab in Foege Building (North) room N140.

N140 workstations

Logging in: N140 is equiped with Windows workstations. Each student (and NSR staff who desire it) will be issued a temporary username (see table below) and password (to be given out in classroom) good for duration of the course on any N140 workstation. At the Windows login screen, enter your temporary username and password, answering the prompt "Log in to:" with "admin\username", where 'admin' is the Domain.

Applications: The JSim application (version 2.0.2), which will be used for most course work, has already been installed.

Saving Files: Files saved in the "My Documents" or "Desktop" directories should be preserved for the duration of the course. Files saved in other directories will disappear by the next time you log in.

Internet access

Access to the internet beyond from N140 workstations requires the use of a temporary UW NetID & password, which will be provided during the course.

  1. UW network is unsecured so you should be able to 'connect' to it (No WEP, WPA, etc). A login is required to use the internet.
  2. Open up web browser. It should automatically connect to the University of Washington access point. If not, use your local network utility program to connect to this access point.
  3. You should see a login page asking you to "Log in with your UW NetID", push the login button.
  4. You should now be at Use the UW NetID and password, posted on the whiteboard in N140.
  5. After entering the user information above you should be at your web homepage and can now go anywhere on the internet that is publicly accessible.

Using your own laptop

If you prefer, you may use your own laptop (Windows, MacOS or Linux) for your coursework. There are no ethernet switches available in N140, so you must use WiFi if you wish to use your laptop. To exercise this option, please install JSim version 2.0.2 (also call the "latest beta") from the JSim download site:
